On 29th November, the WARREDOC “The Digital Mapping as a way to develop and protect culture and environment” presented the outcomes of the 1° GIS Crowdmapping Competition and new activities in the regard of mapping cultural heritage, risk and social media experience. The UNESCO HERITAGE SITE CROWDMAPPING COMPETITION awardee ceremony took place during the presentation of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2016 on “Water and Jobs” at the prestigious Sala di Notari in Perugia. Over 32 participants compete to map not only the beauty and cultural heritage of a recognize UNESCO heritage site but also the inherited risks caused by natural or human-related activity and the social media experience. The best three projects received a Special Professional Certificate together with a 1-year professional license of ESRI ArcGIS Software.
The 1st Crowdmapping Workshop and the Digital Mapping Course was a great success with 130 new strongly motivated Digital Mappers.
This event was the first step of an ambitious project, which aims to create a virtual volunteering community of GIS students, young professionals and faculties willing to share their passion and motivation with international colleagues for producing digital maps and story maps of UNESCO natural and cultural heritage sites.
During the Career Day at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, young professionals and students stop by the WARREDOC stand to express their passion and interest in the fields of water, environment and sustainable development by signing up to the 1st GIS Crowdmapping workshop & Digital Mapping Course.
The University of Foreigners of Perugia had the privilege of having Prof. Paolo Gull, professor at University of Salento and scientific manager of ESRI Italia, the world leader in Geographic Information Systems to present the potential application of GIS and Digital Maps as an opportunity for students and young professionals to develop new skills and knowledge in this exciting field.
Last April, The WARREDOC participated in the ESRI Italy 2016 Conference through research dissemination and the presentation of case studies from Italy and Africa. Our international research associate Francisco Febronio Peña has definitely something to say!
